Pesticide applicators who apply these products must follow strict federal and state requirements to mitigate off-target movement. Recognizing the importance for pesticide applicators to make informed decisions before applying any pesticide, the Spray Conditions Tool for NC ECONet was created via a collaborative effort from the NC State Climate Office and the NC State Extension Weed Team.

This tool currently uses data from 17 NC ECONet weather stations across the state, specifically parameters a pesticide applicator would be interested in: average wind speed, maximum wind gust, and temperature at 2 and 9 meters to detect the presence or absence of a temperature inversion. Two version of the tool are available. A map view version allows you to see data from all 17 stations across the state to get a broader sense of spray conditions. The mobile version allows users to use their location (data pulled from closest NC ECONet weather station) to get more localized spray conditions. The tool is user friendly with a color coding system; green =  spray conditions are good, yellow =  use caution, spray parameters are marginal, and red = spray conditions are poor, label required conditions are not met. Users can also look at past weather conditions, which are also color coordinated, to factor spray conditions for the previous few hours into their decision-making.

The tool can be found at the NC State Cotton Extension Portal (under the Calculator and Decision Aids tab) or the NC Soybeans mobile app.
